Elk calves at Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area

Elk cows with their calves at Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area. Elk calves investigate and play while the elk cows graze at Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area on Highway 38 northeast of Reedsport, Oregon. The elk cow on the left calls her calf as he runs toward her.  We happened to drive by at daybreak June 1, 2012 and observed the elk cows taking care of their newborn calves. We kept as quiet as could and took pictures.

The elk cows and calves stayed separate from the bulls for the next few months in their own group. Other elk cows had calves and joined the group. As summer wore on, we sometimes observed new tinier calves among the more mature ones at Dean Creek.
